If you’re looking for a new soulful music obsession to get you through these dark and dreary days, 22 year old Austin Wiremu has got you covered.

The young artist originally from Melbourne but since moved over to Perth is passionate about both writing and performing music as a form of self expression.

His songs, the select few that have been released, are a wonderful blend of RnB, Soul, Alt-Pop and Folk and his newest track set for release is no exception.

Titled ‘Sink Stains’, his new single focuses in on his soft vocals in such a closeness that it feels as if he could be performing right there in your bedroom. It’s extremely soulful and would make the perfect track to wake up to on a lazy Sunday morning to get you in a calm and positive mood.

The upbeat percussion drum beats in the track was included as an ode to his upbringing as the instruments are commonly used in many Aboriginal and Māori songs.

Lyrically, the song is less about the stains in Austin’s sink and more to do with the way that stains, both literally and metaphorically, are sometimes inevitable but are something you have to accept.

In describing his newest release Austin said, "only recently did I realise how much of my life had been shaped by different stains, different experiences and memories that have stuck with me that I wanted to get rid of but wouldn't go away.”

“I have now learnt that it's better to accept it and move forward, find the beauty in it. Stains make things look ugly but only if you think of it that way."

Austin on Sink Stains…

“It’s a song called sink stains, but it's not really actually about a sink at all.

The song just contains both of those words. The song is really about how stains can be bad but also good depending on the memory associated with it.”

A multitalented artist, Austin also drew and created all of his own promo art, single and EP covers and directed his own music video, but he has a special place in his heart for everything terrible, including bad photoshop jobs and Microsoft Paint.

As an Aboriginal and Māori singer-songwriter, Austin noted that the music he creates has been heavily influenced by his culture, childhood and environment.

Growing up, Austin was surrounded by relatives singing Māori folk songs which piqued his interest in music at a very young age, he was constantly encouraged by his grandmother and mother to follow his passions of singing and music as well as his other creative pursuits.

Stream ‘Sink Stains’ from 6 October and follow Austin’s journey and his soulful vocals at Instagram, Spotify or Triple J Unearthed.
